Helen, Georgia

“The Alps of the South”

Helen, Georgia is a Bavarian-themed alpine village in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northeast Georgia, 90 minutes north of Atlanta. The town redesigned itself in 1969 to look like a Bavarian village to save its dying lumber economy. The Chattahoochee River runs straight through Main Street, and the surrounding Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest holds Anna Ruby Falls (153 ft), Brasstown Bald (4,784 ft β€” Georgia’s highest peak), and three dozen named hiking trails within a 30-minute drive.

Permanent population: 530. Annual visitors: about 2 million. Helen hosts the longest-running Oktoberfest in the United States — since 1970 — every September through early November, plus a German-style Christkindlmarkt from late November through early January. ExploreHelen is an independent visitor guide. Every business listing is verified within the past 90 days; nothing here is pay-to-play.

Common questions about visiting Helen, Georgia

Where is Helen, Georgia?
Helen is in White County in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northeast Georgia, about 90 minutes (85 miles) north of Atlanta via I-985 and GA-75. The Chattahoochee River runs through the center of the village. It sits at roughly 1,500 feet of elevation, with Brasstown Bald β€” Georgia's highest point at 4,784 feet β€” about 35 minutes north.
What is Helen, Georgia known for?
Helen is a Bavarian-themed alpine village. In 1969 the fading lumber town reinvented its storefronts in South German style to draw tourists, and it worked: today about two million people visit each year. It is best known for hosting the longest-running Oktoberfest in the United States (since 1970), tubing the Chattahoochee through downtown in summer, the Christkindlmarkt at Christmas, and as a base for waterfalls and hiking in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.
How far is Helen from Atlanta, and how do I get there?
It is about 85 miles and 90 minutes from downtown Atlanta. The usual route is I-85 North to I-985/US-23 toward Gainesville, then GA-75 North through Cleveland into Helen. There is no commercial airport in Helen; most visitors fly into Atlanta (ATL) and drive. See our Atlanta-to-Helen drive guide for stops along the way.
What is the best time of year to visit Helen?
Each season has a draw. October is the busiest and most spectacular, combining Oktoberfest with peak fall foliage, but expect crowds and book lodging months ahead. Summer is for river tubing and warm evenings. Late November through December brings the Christkindlmarkt and village lighting. Spring is the quietest and greenest, ideal for waterfalls and wildflowers without the crowds.
Is Helen, Georgia worth visiting?
For most travelers, yes β€” especially if you treat the Bavarian village as a base camp rather than the whole trip. The downtown is small and can feel touristy, but within a 30-minute drive you have Anna Ruby Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, Unicoi State Park, Smithgall Woods, the Appalachian Trail, gold-panning in Dahlonega, and dozens of mountain trails. Pairing the festivals and German food with the surrounding outdoors is what makes a Helen trip memorable.
Where should I stay in Helen, Georgia?
Options range from riverfront hotels and the Bavarian-style Helendorf within walking distance of downtown, to secluded mountain cabins with hot tubs and fireplaces a few minutes out, to barrel cabins and lakeside lodge rooms at Unicoi State Park. Cabins are the most popular choice for couples and families. Use our live stays map to compare current prices and availability across hotels, cabins, and vacation rentals.
