Welcome to
Helen, Georgia
“The Alps of the South”
Helen, Georgia is a Bavarian-themed alpine village in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northeast Georgia, 90 minutes north of Atlanta. The town redesigned itself in 1969 to look like a Bavarian village to save its dying lumber economy. The Chattahoochee River runs straight through Main Street, and the surrounding Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest holds Anna Ruby Falls (153 ft), Brasstown Bald (4,784 ft β Georgia’s highest peak), and three dozen named hiking trails within a 30-minute drive.
Permanent population: 530. Annual visitors: about 2 million. Helen hosts the longest-running Oktoberfest in the United States — since 1970 — every September through early November, plus a German-style Christkindlmarkt from late November through early January. ExploreHelen is an independent visitor guide. Every business listing is verified within the past 90 days; nothing here is pay-to-play.
